King Philip, sachem of the Wampanoags of southern Massachusetts in 1675, led a loose confederation of natives in an effort to drive the English colonists out of New England and reclaim their land. Even though the natives by that year were outnumbered by the colonists more than two to one, the Indians succeeded in attacking 45 English villages, completely destroying thirteen including 12,000 homes. The English, indeed, had reason to fear that they would be driven from the land. The colonists were plagued with bad leadership and they made many blunders, allowing the natives at first to gain the upper hand with their effective guerrilla tactics. Eventually, the English adopted the same tactics and by using friendly natives to guide them, gained the upper hand by late spring of 1676. Of about 18,000 natives in the area at the beginning of the war, only 4000 remained at the end.
