The Compromise of 1877 was an informal, unwritten deal that settled the disputed 1876 U.S. Presidential election. Through it, Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was awarded the White House over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden on the understanding that Hayes would remove the federal troops that were propping up Republican state governments in South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana.

Rutherford B. Hayes became president as a result of the Compromise of 1877 and the 5 main provisions of the compromise were that the government would remove federal troops from the South, the government would give land grants and loans for the construction of railroads linking the South to the West, Southern officials would receive federal funds for construction and improvement projects, Hayes would appoint a Democrat to his cabinet, and the Democrats promised to respect African Americans' rights.
