Andrew Johnson (born December 29, 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina; died July 31, 1875 in Elizabethton, Tennessee) succeeded Abraham Lincoln as the seventeenth President of the United States, serving between April 15, 1865 and March 4, 1869, including the whole of the year 1867. Vice President Johnson's succession to presidency was caused by the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
