The first Roman Emperor was Augustus, a nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar.

Julius Caesar was not emperor, though he held all the power in the Roman Republic. When he was assassinated, Augustus (or Octavian, as he was called before he became emperor) won the ensuing civil war and crowned himself Emperor.

By the time the last emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire was deposed, this part of this empire had already lost all of its land expect for Italy and a rump state in northern Gaul (the domain of Soissons). North-western Africa had been taken over by the Vandals, Hispania (France and Portugal) and south-western France by the Visigoths, eastern Gaul bu the Burgundians, Alsace (in not-eastern France) and the Swiss Plateau by the Alemanni. The last emperor was deposed by Odocacer, a Germanic leader of the Germanic troops of the Roman army in Italy. He styled himself as the king of Italy instead of emperor and gave the imperial title of the western part of the empire to the eastern Roman emperor. Thirteen years late Zeno told his ally, Theoderic the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths that he could have Italy if he deposed Odocaer, who was defeated after a four year war. Theoderic then established the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths which covered Italy, Illyricum (most of the former Yugoslavia) and Pannonia (eastern Austria and western Hungary)
