Wentworth Cheswell made the midnight ride on horseback to warn New Hampshire residents of coming of British soldiers. Cheswell was a key figure in New Hampshire politics. His life was used in public debates during the 1820 Missouri Compromise as an example how Blacks were able to be equals in society with whites. The fable of Revere comes from a Longfellow poem written in 1861 and in reality he didn't ride through the night yelling about the British coming.

Who were the other riders who aided Paul Revere?

Paul Revere wasn't the only midnight rider messager. Two other patriots, William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott rode around, alerting other patriots, " The Redcoats are coming! The Redcoats are coming!" But Revere was the only one earning credit for his actions. They say that Paul Revere rode around saying, '' The British are coming, the British are coming!'' but he didn't because the colonies still considered themselves as British citizens.

Who rode to warn the colonists that the british troops were coming?

The real midnight rider wasn't Paul Revere it was actually 25-year-old mail carrier named Israel Bissel. He rode some 400 miles in 5 days. He alerted local militias that a British Force was marching on Lexington & Concord. Another rider was a 16-year-old girl named Sibyl Ludington, who rode more than 40 miles in 6 hours and called out any army of patriots to halt a British advance at Danbury, Connecticut. Paul Revere's mission was to warn rebel leader Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British soldiers were on the way to arrest them. Paul Revere never saw the signal and he wasn;t the only midnight rider.
