Some additional info:

The practice of the Union Army was to send one farrier/blacksmith with each troop of 82-100 men. The Army's horses were vital to their victory over the South, so they had to be taken care of. Sometimes they had shoes, whereas the enlisted men didn't.

Point of interest: Gen. Grant's favorite horse was Cincinnati. His other horses' names were Methuselah, Rondy, Fox, Jack, Jeff Davis, and Kangaroo.
