How long would it take for a person to learn Italian?

That really depends on the individual and the dedication and hours spent. The fastest method for learning a language is to live in that country and then study it hours a day at a language school. I speak Spanish and French and it took me around 2 and 1/2 years to say I was high intermediate to advanced in both languages. When I say high intermediate to advance I am talking about a B2 to C1 level on the European language grading scale. I myself am starting the Italian language this Fall, I will be living in France studying Italian but I will be spending next summer in Italy . I hope that with Italian being so close to French and Spanish, I will pick up this language really well in 1 and 1/2 years.. I hope this helps..

There are some shared words and historical influences due to their proximity and interactions over time, but they are not considered similar languages.
