The first known European to cross the Simpson Desert, and survive, was John McDouall Stuart, who traversed it several times between 1860 and 1862. He finally achieved his aim of crossing Australia from south to north, and back again, in 1862. Prior to this, explorers Burke and Wills travelled through the eastern edge of the Simpson, in 1860-61, but they did not survive their journey. There is some discrepancy about who crossed the desert and when, particularly in light of the many rescue parties which set out in search of Burke and Wills. However, others who only skirted the desert include: * Charles Sturt in 1844-5 * James Lewis in 1874-5 * In 1886 David Lindsay followed a line of wells through the desert * In 1886, Augustus Poeppel surveyed part of the Simpson Desert * In 1929 Cecil Madigan did an aerial reconnaissance but did not explore the desert on the ground until 1939 The first European to cross the Simpson Desert from east to west was Colson. * In May 1936 after good rains had fallen on the area, Edmund Colson, a pastoralist from Blood Creek Station, felt that this maybe a good time to attempt complete crossing of the Simpson from west to east and back again. His inspiration was Cecil Madigan's aerial reconnaissance. Madigan had named the great desert below him the Simpson Desert after A A Simpson, his sponsor and President of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch). Colson took with him an Aboriginal man named Peter Ains, two riding camels 3 pack camels camels, provisions for two months, prismatic compasses and maps. His water containers gave him a 'safe ration of water for the whole of the distance across the desert, plus a 50 percent margin in case of accidents.
