Geologist Reg Sprigg, who was the founder of Geosurveys Australia, was the first to cross the Simpson Desert by motorised vehicle. He did this in 1962.

Sprigg departed from Mt Daer, about 11 km north of the border between South Australia and the Northern Territory, heading east until he crossed the border into Queensland, and reached Birdsville.

What is special about the Simpson desert?

The Simpson Desert is one of several deserts in Australia, and covers about 180,000 square kilometres in central Australia, spanning the Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia. It is the fourth-largest desert in Australia. There are no maintained roads across the desert, but numerous 4Wd tracks. In 2008, for the first time, the Simpson Desert was closed to tourists from December 1 until mid-March in 2009. This was because of the high costs of rescuing tourists who foolishly try to cross the desert or take on the sand-dunes in the hottest months of the year. It is also to prevent the deaths that occur from this. However, it is also for the health of the desert - to give the desert some time to "regenerate" from the many tourists also. The Simpson Desert has some interesting things to see. These include: * Dalhousie Springs, where you can enjoy hot springs * Kaliduwarry Waterhole, a permanent supply which stretches for some 30 kilometres * the Birdsville Track * the Old Ghan Heritage Track * Chambers Pillar, a 50m sandstone pillar rising up from the desert plain * the Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve * Poeppel Corner, a remote spot where where three state borders meet * incredible red-orange, rippling sand dunes - there are over 1100 sand dunes all running parallel in a north-south direction * colourful sunrises and sunsets, unlike those you will see anywhere else

Who was the first person who crossed the Simpson Desert?

The first known European to cross the Simpson Desert, and survive, was John McDouall Stuart, who traversed it several times between 1860 and 1862. He finally achieved his aim of crossing Australia from south to north, and back again, in 1862. Prior to this, explorers Burke and Wills travelled through the eastern edge of the Simpson, in 1860-61, but they did not survive their journey. There is some discrepancy about who crossed the desert and when, particularly in light of the many rescue parties which set out in search of Burke and Wills. However, others who only skirted the desert include: * Charles Sturt in 1844-5 * James Lewis in 1874-5 * In 1886 David Lindsay followed a line of wells through the desert * In 1886, Augustus Poeppel surveyed part of the Simpson Desert * In 1929 Cecil Madigan did an aerial reconnaissance but did not explore the desert on the ground until 1939 The first European to cross the Simpson Desert from east to west was Colson. * In May 1936 after good rains had fallen on the area, Edmund Colson, a pastoralist from Blood Creek Station, felt that this maybe a good time to attempt complete crossing of the Simpson from west to east and back again. His inspiration was Cecil Madigan's aerial reconnaissance. Madigan had named the great desert below him the Simpson Desert after A A Simpson, his sponsor and President of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch). Colson took with him an Aboriginal man named Peter Ains, two riding camels 3 pack camels camels, provisions for two months, prismatic compasses and maps. His water containers gave him a 'safe ration of water for the whole of the distance across the desert, plus a 50 percent margin in case of accidents.

The first European to cross the Gibson Desert was John Forrest, who did so in 1874, rather than 1873. Peter Warburton was actually the first to the Western deserts generally, achieving this in 1873, but he crossed the Great Sandy Desert, to the north of the Gibson Desert.
