Andrew Johnson was impeached for breaking the Tenure of Office Act which was passed largely to prevent him from the cabinet member he inherited from Lincoln. He claimed the law was unconstitutional and the Supreme Court agreed with him many years later.

Why should Obama be impeached?

1. Only the House of Representatives can impeach the President. 2. The president must first break a federal law in order to be impeached. As of right now only two presidents have ever been voted on by the House of Representatives to be impeached and the House voted against it. Unless President Obama breaks a federal law, it is impossible for the House of Representatives to impeach him.

Was Andrew Johnson the first US President to be impeached?

No. Bill Clinton was the second President to be impeached. President Richard Nixon was nearly impeached in 1974, but escaped charges by resigning.

Who was the only US President to be impeached but not removed from office?

Both Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were impeached by the US House of Representatives, but acquitted (found not guilty of the charges) at trial in the Senate. Both were impeached, but neither was removed. President Nixon was on the verge of being impeached, but chose to resign rather than face charges.

Can a senator impeach a senator?

Senators can be impeached -- and have been impeached. The first (and as of now, only) senator to be impeached was William Blount in 1797. Per Article II, Section 4, of the Constitution, the House of Representatives has the power to impeach the president, vice president and any civil officer. There have been only 19 impeachments in our history -- 2 presidents, 1 senator, 1 Secretary of War (1876) and 15 federal judges.

Would the senate serve as a jury if the president committed a crime?
