King James I laid claim to the land in 1606 and appointed land owners that did little to develop the land and in 1658 Massachusetts took over and in 1691 they made Maine part of MASS. There was a seperatist movement in 1816 where the people wanted back their land and in 1819 Maine won its independence from Mass. Maine would actually be larger had it not been for the land being divided way back to surrounding states including New Brunswick, Canada....
