Charlemagne

Charles the Great, as he is also sometimes called, was born sometime around 745 and died in 814. He inherited the position of King of the Franks from his father in 768. Combining a thirst for power with ardent support of the Pope and Christianity, he conquered lands to the east of his kingdom, requiring that the conquered peoples convert to Christianity or be executed. He led his forces against the Muslims in Spain with less success. He removed the Lombards from power in northern Italy and was crowned King of Italy in 774. Charlemagne unified much of Western Europe under a single ruler for the first time since the collapse of the old Roman Empire. In recognition of this, he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in the year 800 by Pope Leo III.

If you mean the population of France in the days of Julius Ceasar, it was Vercingetorix, the leader of the great uprising against the Romans. Around 600 years later, it was Charles Martel ("the Hammer"), grandfather of Charlemagne, who in 732 AD defeated the Saracens and stopped the attempts at conquest of Europe by Islamic forces.
