The original "Asphalt Philosopher" was Roland H Johnson III. He was given that nickname in 1971 by people in Michigan's northern peninsula while hitch-hiking throughout the US and Canada. A member of the original Rainbow Coalition of Living Light (Rainbow Family) Roland was a fixture in the Austin Hippie scene in the mid 1960's and 1970's. He was one of the original bouncers at the Armadillo World Headquarters. He was a blend of Hippie, Jesus freak, biker, cowboy and a product of old Texas culture.

Roland eventually became a college teacher and an ordained Baptist minister. Best known for his theories on the convergence of the internet, family, religion and society, Roland began a website in 1995 called the Asphalt Philosopher. A daily column called "Thoughts for You" (available in Kindle books at Amazon.com) was read worldwide for several years.

Roland's teachings and publications were focused on marriage, and the growth of "techno-culture" a name he attached to his theories on postmodernity and the rise of virtual culture. He predicted the role of the internet in social groups and societies arising without physical contact amongst group participants. He also developed online education and was broadcasting his college courses as early as the fall of 1995.
