In Europe, in 1517, the Protestants split from the Catholics. They believed the Catholics were keeping the people in the dark, as only priests could decipher The Bible, so whatever they said, people must believe. To keep up this facade, some priests even told followers it was a sin to learn how to read. But when people began to learn to read, they picked up the bible first. Once the commoners read it, they deciphered it differently from the priests, and wanted to change the way they worship because of it. Now, protestants have split into many almost identical groups, that all worship the same god in almost the same way.
In addition, representatives of the Catholic Church began selling Papal Indulgences (forgiveness for sins guaranteed by the Pope) in increasingly questionable circumstances. In exchange for cash (which the church needed) one could be forgiven for a sin he intended to commit in the future. The corrupt nature of this bargain, and of the institution itself, became too obvious to ignore.
Martin Luther, although he didn't intend for the church to split. He was trying to bring to light problems that were within the church hoping that the Catholic leaders would just fix these, but instead it caused the church to split into two separate parts, Catholicism, and Protestantism.
An ever growing intolerance to the churches views on usury and masterbation.
The European Renaissance was a time where the churhc split into two major religions, the Roman Catholics and the Protestants. The Renaissance was a time where it made the people look at the Christian faith and notice its flaws. It made the people think about what the church was doing and it made them think about what powers the church was abusing.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, established the Christian church, when he made St Peter the Rock upon which he would build his Church.
He made Christianity the state religion, he favoured Christian soldiers, he gave large sums of money to the church, and he rebuilt churches that were destroyed in the great persecution
We do not know when the first schism in the Christian Church occurred. Even in the time of Saint Paul, he talks of opponents and those who taught a "different Christ". By the beginning of the second century, and probably earlier, Christianity was divided along two major lines: what is sometimes now called the proto-Catholic-Orthodox Church and the Gnostic Churches. Marcion made his break from Rome in the middle of the second century. The split of the Coptic Church from the Catholic-Orthodox Church occurred in 451 CE. The Great Schism of 1054 separated the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches. The Western Schism of the fourteenth century temporarily split the Catholic Church. The Protestant Reformation was the next major schism, in the sixteenth century.
Unfortunately, there is no single answer to this question that will be acceptable to all Christian groups. For example, the Pope recently made public comments reflecting the long-standing teaching of his church that the Roman Catholic church is the one true church. Among other mainline Christian groups, there will be some that will claim exclusive rights to be considered the Christian church. Other moderate mainline churches will be open to varieties of other interpretations. There is no such separate entity as a 'Christian church' but rather a body of persons from many denominations who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord.
There are many churches named 'St. John the Baptist' usually made from various types of stone and cement. Spiritually, this church and other Christian churches are made out of its membership.
Henry VIII did not take over the Catholic Church. He split from it and made himself the head of this new Church of England. As he was now the head of his church, he granted himself a divorce.
The true church is a body of believers and not a building made of stone and mortar. Jesus came to build His church, which is a spiritual church made up of all true believers in Him. It is not any denomination of believers such as Baptists or Catholics or Pentecostals, but all who have put their faith and trust in Him as Lord and Savior, so I guess you would say their name is Christian, from any Christian denomination.
Baptism can be for other Christian faiths, not just Catholic. So if you are becoming a Christian, you are baptised.
