The major combatants of WW1 were the German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire and Ottomon Empire on the Central Powers side and France, UK and Russian Empire on the Entente. These states however were made up of modern states and had large empires that are now largely been disbanded into successor states. So the modern states that made up these nations would be a much longer list.

The south side of America fought the north side of America about slavery.

In addition, the Southern States, organized as the Confederate States of America fought for their independence. This was in part to preserve slavery and to expand it south to perhaps Cuba, parts of Mexico and in Central America.
