Harijans is the name Gandhi gave the chandala caste when he said they were holier than the others because they labored harder.
Gandhi coined the term Harijans (children of God) for the Dalits and the Depressed Classes.However, most dalits were against the use of this term. Narendra Jadhav, notable Dalit economist, once commented, "If we are the children of God, who are the others? Those of the Devil?"
