Just prior and during the US Civil War, Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederacy. Davis was a West Point graduate, fought in the Mexican War and was once the US Secretary of War. The United States, or the Union as it was often called had Abraham Lincoln as its president. Lincoln was an attorney from Illinois and was once a US Representative as a Whig Party member. He had once been a militia fighter in Illinois and prior to running for the US presidency, had run for the US senate seat of Stephen Douglas in 1858.

The Constitution of the Confederate States was very similar to the Constitution of the United States, but there were key differences. The major difference was that the Confederate President was elected to a single six year term and was not eligible for reelection.

How many Confederate Presidents were there?

The Confederate States of America was made up of the states that seceded from the US to bring about the Civil War. When the war ended these states returned to the Union and the Confederate States ceased to exist. The Confederate States had only one president and that was Jefferson Davis. He might be called a confederate president, I suppose, but he was not president of the US.
