There is much dispute and argumentation made over this subject. It is generally concluded that these letters were the product of Virginian delegate Richard Henry Lee, a fervid opposer to Madison's strongly proposed federal government and more an avid proponent of state rights and their ability to ultimately decide and regulate themselves. My studies however have strongly persuaded me to come to the conclusion that these letters were not written by Lee, and rather by an unknown individual to whom history has never been able to name. Lee never wrote any extended pieces like the 180 plus page farmer's letters that were written in a span of four months. It can be seen as well that his friends and colleagues have also indicated their disbelief in Lee authorship of these works simply because they could not fathom the idea he possessed the stamina to produce the texts, nor had he done so before in his life. A more probable conclusion of the letter's authorship would implicate Melancton Smith as the individual charged with writing these letters. Up until the vote to determine the constitution, he made and argued a number of the same ideals and points that were enshrined in the documents and greatly stands out in my opinion as the most suitable of candidates to be associated with the authorship of this piece. Nevertheless, this is mere speculation as no definitive proof has been brought forward to guarantee and solidify the answer to this question.
