It is called 'circumcision'. Circumcision for males is compulsory per Islam religion (and also Judaism and Christianity) and is practiced since prophet Abraham life when he was commanded by God to perform circumcision for his sons.
However, religion doesn't call for female circumcision although it may be practiced in some communities per local traditions and cultures.
