In the past, the Chinese did not have a very comfortable relationship with dogs and cats. Due to certain circumstances, they resorted to cats and dogs as food source. Many tradition beliefs believe that dog meat is good for the body.
Keep in mind that this represents only a minority of the Chinese. The amount of dogs and cats eaten is far less than the entire population of China. Additionally, many of us eat animals that are taboo to some cultures (ex. cattle in India, pork in the Middle East) so we should learn to respect cultural differences.

∙ 8y agoChinese people are not always cruel to dogs. You could also ask the question, why are French people so cruel to dogs? There will always be signs of cruelty to animals in every country so you shouldn't single one country out. The question you should ask should be, why are PEOPLE so cruel to dogs? Why? Because it's in our nature. That's why.

∙ 8y agoFor the same reason American people are so cruel to pigs: cultures value animals differently and thus perceive them differently. What one culture may see as food, another might see as sacred.

It depends on the individual dog. I have a poodle and a chihuahua. Their breeds are known to be snotty and yappy, but they are both quiet, and kind dogs. I have only met nice Chinese Crested dogs, so it just depends, but usually Chinese Crested dogs are one-person dogs, and don't like anyone else.
