If society wasn't so worried about who someone was sleeping with, it wouldn't be a big deal. Unless you are interested in being in a relationship with the person, it really isn't yours or anyones business. There are a lot of people who feel that being gay is wrong, usually for supposedly religious reasons and will often get physical about it. There is also the very real possibility of losing a job or in some places your housing if you rent. Until society as a whole figures out that being gay is normal for those who are and gets over it, there will always be some need to be careful about where and when one comes out.
