There are many answers to this question. Just some of the reasons are; maybe the country doesnt have any Natural Resources to make goods out of to sell. Maybe the country has a stupid or selfish or ignorant leader. Maybe the country has a religeon that doesn't value making money. Maybe they have no land that can grow food. Maybe they don't get enough water. Maybe they get too much water.

Most countries that are rich are countries that give more freedom to their citizens, letting them own property and allowing them to keep the results of their industry. Power equals Freedom. The more Power the government has, the less freedom the citizens have.

Also the more Capitalistic a country is, the richer it tends to be. Capitalism is a good thing as long as it is tempered with respect for our fellow man.

Some people are born into families that have aquired wealth many years before. Some people have worked hard and long to get their wealth. Some people are in the right place at the right time. Other people are born into poverty and will stay there unless they work hard to overcome it. Some people are lazy and just don't want to work. Some people work hard all their lives and just scrape by. There are many reasons for peoples financial status in life. It's important to remember who you are not what you have. That's what makes the person.

There are a number of factors. Some people just work harder and apply themselves more than others. They tend to have better values, waste less and make better choices. A lot of this has to do with good upbringing and education.

However, that is not the entire story. There are places with oppressive governments who take legitimate opportunities from people. If there is a system in place to hold certain groups of people back, then it is hard to succeed.

Wealth is relative. So long as some have more than others, there will be "poor people".

It is caused by a combination of factors. Some people have substance abuse or mental problems which keep them trapped in poverty. There are people who choose to be poor, such as preferring a simpler life or taking vows of poverty for spiritual or religious reasons. Often, local economic factors are a cause, as well as governmental policies and the actions of big industry.

Education can be part of the problem, since uneducated people have less job opportunities. If there are many jobs, that isn't as bad. However, there are only so many unskilled jobs to go around.

Unwanted pregnancies is another issue. Poorer people don't have the same access to Birth Control and abortions as other people, and they may even be opposed to such things for religious reasons. When men don't have steady work, they often feel they must prove their masculinity somehow, and one realm that all men have available to them for proving their masculinity is sex. Sex can be used like a drug to help numb the pain of feeling powerless and feeling left out by society. So it becomes a cycle, where poorer people may be more sexually active, or at least use less protection, and produce future generations of impoverished people. Assuming some aspects of poverty can be learned, impoverished parents may teach values that ensure poverty, since that is all they know.

What is comparative poverty?

Comparative poverty is a measure of poverty, which is also used as a measure of inequality. It refers to looking at poverty in comparison with others. For example, if you live in a country where there is a lot of inequality, where there are very rich people living in proximity to very poor people, it is argued, that the poor in countries like these are more aware of their poverty as they can compare it with the wealth of others living relatively close to them. At the same time, if you are poor in a country where most other people are poor, it is further argued, that you will not be as aware of your poverty as you are comparing yourself to other poor people. Therefore comparative poverty refers to what poor people can compare themselves with and how that affects their own perceptions of their poverty.
