During the time period in which many new American cities were founded, most highly educated people were well versed in Greek history and language. This is because it was the Classical Greeks who first developed many of the current aspects of our civilization. Those include belief in individualism, democracy, appreciation of the arts, and the application of science and mathematics in order to understand the world. Ancient Greece was not one large country, but a collection of independent city-states. Naming a city for a Greek god or goddess may have been intended to allude to the independent spirit of the city. In addition, the Greek gods and goddesses of Greek mythology each had particular qualities or powers, and it may be that the city founders wanted their cities to be noted for similar characteristics.
