Some elements are stable on their own because they have a complete outer energy level. These elements are called noble gases. Hydrogen and Helium have a complete energy level with two electrons and all of the other elements are stable with eight. When an element doesn't have a complete outer energy level it is stable in a compound. This is because it is being combined with another element to complete it's energy level.

Periodic trends illustrate how some elements are very reactive while others are stable.
because of the valence toms
its because some are naturally stable like helium, when some like hydrogen have an extra electron in their electron clouds. That's why they are unstable. When they meet with an element with one extra electron they can be stable because the first electron cloud holds 2 electrons. ex. : hydrogen - 1 electron hydrogen - 1 electron adding both together will give you a full eletron cloud. Hope this helps!
Magnesium ions have a 2+ charge, while chloride ions each have 1- charge. In order to cancel out the charges to create a stable, neutral compound, the formula must be MgCl2.
Iron is a more reactive metal than copper, and so will replace it in a compound. The more reactive a metal is, the more stable it is in a compound, and the less stable it is in its elemental form. So relative to one another, iron is more stable in a compound while copper is more stable as apure element.
an element is a single substance while a compound is made up of multiple elements. Theirs no way to now how many elements form to make a compound... only through a microscope/
Elements make up compounds. Elements are purely one substance, while a compound is formed by chemical bonds between two or more elements.
The element my be rare because it is part of a compound and cannot be found as an element as itself in nature. The only way to get the element is to extract it from the compound. That may not be very easy.
