Originally, European slaves consisted mostly of Slavs, where the word is derived from. The pope of the Catholic Church around the time decided that using Christians as slaves was not a good thing, most of the Slavic slaves being Christians. So, Africa was homed in on as an easy place to get slaves with no Christians.
