the reason why you can't take the key out is probably because it is not in park, i noticed it with my '91 corsica. i have no idea why it won't go into park though
Neutral switch
It could be the starter, keyswitch, neutral lockout switch, wiring connector or any of a number of other problems. Unfortunately you have to just track it down.
Generally the problem is either a defective neutral safety switch or a bad ignition switch (not ignition key lock).
Possibly a neutral lockout switch, possibly a bad connection, possibly an ignition switch.
The symptoms of neutral safety, on your 1987 Mercedes-Benz, will begin with the vehicle not shifting properly. Another symptom is the vehicle ignition switch not turning to the off position.
You can buy a Haynes Manual that will have that information. The ignition switch is on the column near the bottom. It is slotted so that you can adjust it. The neutral safety switch mounts there as well.
The ignition is live or hot and has power available. The term neutral does not really apply.

i would check your ignition module and coil as a first step. if it is intermittant and predictable, its an electrical issue.
if its a manual transmission its attached to the clutch pedal housing if its an automatic its the shifter

Your 1996 Chevrolet Blazer may not start due to a faulty ignition switch. The electronic fuel pump may also be faulty and need to be changed.
