Portugal emplorers went around Africa to get to India. Columbus had different route to travel: to go across the Atlantic but back then the Americas were uncharted so he bumped into these continients instead of India but though for while that the Native Americans were actually Indians.

Chris could not sail through Asia because it is land-locked. It took Marco Polo's expedition a long time to "caravan" through to China.
