Colonies gave the mother country several things. The colony would provide it's wealth to the mother country and it's resources. It gave a foothold to explore other regions and international power with other nations. For instance Spain controlled the entire Pacific Ocean in the 1500's and this kept the English in check for a time. Nations needed the riches the colonies provided. Columbus was looking for gold and a route to India. Had he found India a new water trade route would have been opened for Spain. Things like spices, silk, and perfumes would have been controlled by Spain giving them economic power. If and when the nation's of our time colonize another planet the same reasons will be found for the new colonization. That is one reason an American flag was planted on the moon. It tells other nations that the US all ready has a stake in the moon.

Since the colonies belonged to them, they were justified in all of them. The colonists didn't mind the taxes, they minded that they didn't get any say.
