they do, there is a layer of fat over the top of the retus abdominis (abs) that 'hides' the effects of crunches. if you feel they are not working progress the exercise, try doing them on a fit/swiss ball - it really focuses the crunch to the abdominal area. otherwise if none of this fits then you are not doing the crunch properly

Work out a lot and do some MAJOR crunches or do about 3 weeks worth of pull ups.this wont happen over night so dont worry

Crunches build muscles while situps build abdominal muscles. Each workout is important based on individual needs.
It's not that crunches don't work, it's that they won't get you a flat stomach. What you want is to do cardio. Anything that gets your body moving and your heart rate up will help you lose fat. When you do lose the fat around your stomach you will see the results of the crunches (muscle definition). It's good to do both (and not just crunches other "absentric" moves) if you want a flat stomach, but being active and eating well will lose the fat that is really the point of flat stomacs.
it is always good to get the exercise with crunches but does not help get abs. it will help your stomach get tougher though so the more you work on it the tougher your stomach will get, but you wont have abs!
