he went to Africa because as he was in a large family, he had to go to Africa with his brother to farm. Another reason is that he was a sickly boy, so his mother thought that his health may improve from the weather that is warm in Africa

As did many European Powers, England was looking to exploit Africa's abundant Natural Resources. Plus, it won some of the colonies as a result of defeating other European powers in various wars. There was also a movement to spread Christianity to other lands, used largely as a pretext, but believed by the missionaries and a large portion of the population themselves.
