The second voyage of Columbus to the New World was comprised of a fleet of 17 ships carrying over a thousand men, plus their supplies, with the intent of establishing permanent colonies in the Americas.
The third voyage was only six ships- three of them were loaded with supplies for Hispaniola and sailed directly there. The other three sailed farther south, intending to explore whatever might lie south of the previously visited islands, and to search for a passage to continental Asia.
The intention of the fourth voyage (coincidentally, four ships) was to search for the Strait of Malacca, into the Indian ocean.
During the time, many people wanted to find a route to Asia. For riches, gold, etc. Many other reasons were to 1: spread religion, 2: glory, 3: gold and riches.
