There were many reasons, but the biggest that I recall is that Germany had defeated France in 1870 in a war, and had claimed the two French territories: Alsace and Lorraine. The French had vowed that one day the would reclaim the lost provinces, at no matter what cost. If it claimed its revenge, it would also prove to the rest of the world that the French were still a force to be reckoned with.

After WWI German troops were not allowed to occupy the Rhineland, this was so that if Germany tried to invade France its troops would have to go through the Rhineland, giving France time to prepare rather than if the troops bordered the French border (France and Germany only border in the Rhineland area).

Because France had people waiting , so if Germany entered then France would attack, so Germany went through Belgium [known as the "back door" to France] to get the France, thinking the Belgium people wouldn't mind but they did.

Since Britain had a treaty with Belgium they thought they it would be loyal to stick up to the treaty, therefore that's how Britain came into the war.

Since Canada was part of Britain's colony back then, they had no choice but the enter the war because of the Britain.

When World War 2 started which countries were first to participate in the war?

Well the war started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. To avoid war with Russia from the beginning Hitler made a deal with Russia. So at the beginning of the war Russia didnt come in. (They did come in in 1941 when Germany invaded them) Britain and France were allies with Poland so they declared war on Germany. The US didnt come in until 1942 so the US is a no and Italy was a German ally and was fighting in the Greece and North Africa. So Britain, Germany, Italy, and France were the only countries in the start of the war.
