Germany has a history that is many centuries old. The Rhineland, Austria and Hungary were part of the monarchical history of Germany. When the Cold War Came the country was split into two because the USSR made the Eastern half one of their communist possessions. When the USSR communist regime ended in the early Nineties Germany was restored to a single country again. The country is now a single country with a democratic government. There are no more monarchs, dictators or communists in control.

___

Please note, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was NOT part of Germany. They were 2 distinct Empires. Austria was absorbed into Germany in 1938 in the Auchloss, but became a separate country after WW2. After WW1 Hungary became a separate entity, no longer part of an empire.

When WW2 ended, Germany was partitioned by the Allied powers. Each were given sphere of influence. While the Western half was run by France, Britain and USA, the Eastern half fell under the control of the USSR.

Eventually the Western half allowed the German people to take back control of their country/economy etc. The Soviet Union did not. They built the Iron Curtain to keep the Germanies apart and prevent the East Germans from fleeing to freedom. The countries did not rejoin until the fall of the Berlin Wall and dismantling of the East German Dictatorship.
