Many of the later Mughal Emperors were less than tolerant of Hindu customs and traditions. The memory of that history made most Hindus disinterested in returning the Muslims to power.

How did relationships between Hindus and Muslims envelop over time?

Hindu and Muslims are two very different nations and Islam and Hinduism are totally different Religions, infact totally opposite. There was so much fire and hatred between two nations for many reasons. For instance... Muslims believe in One GOD, Hindus believe in ten of thousands... Hindus think they are the BEST and Purest persons on earth and Muslims are impure, Hindus used to treat them very bad. Muslims eat beef, Hindus worship cows and think her as holy mother. So when Muslim used to slaughter cows for meat in India, it was a unforgiveable sin for Hindus. Hindus (Indian Nations) were always under foreign attacks and have been ruled by foreigners most of their history. Muslims ruled over them too for almost 1000 years, so when British take over India by ending Muslim rule, naturally Hindus had so much hate for the ruling Muslims.

Why did Hindus react against the partition of Bengal?

The partition of Bengal aroused fury among the Hindus. The Hindus thought that the partition of Bengal was an attempt to break the unity among the Hindus which might be a threat to the British Government. They thought that the British had applied their 'Divide and Rule Policy' meaning that the Hindus and the Muslims will keep on fighting with each other and the threat which the radical nationalism of the Hindus was disturbing the Britishers would come to an end. Consequently the Hindus' attempts to kick the British out of the Sub-continent and establish Hindu Rule would loose their solidarity and strength. Furthermore the Hindus could not bear to see the Muslims flourish and the partition of Bengal meant exactly that. It can also be seen that the Hindus wouldn't allow any degree of Partition of their Motherland, the India. This fact was confirmed by the height of opposition and objection to the Partition of India in 1947 from the Hindus.

Was the treatment of the Muslims by British after 1857 justified?

No, the treatment of Muslims by the British after 1857 was not justified at all. Even though other communties also suffered because of the consequences of the War of Independence, Muslims were treated especially brutally. As the British knew that India was mainly taken from Muslims and they feared that they would take it back from them. They also thought that Muslims were 'not trustworthy' and recruited men from mostly from other groups. Other than that Muslims were not offered high profile job opportunities. Although no Indian had good jobs in the government most of them belonged to Hindus studied from 'English type' schools. The British kept the Muslims illiterate, to keep Muslims from gaining public office and withdrew funding from Muslim schools and Muslim education declined. A well-known British historian of India wrote at the time: "There is scarcely a Government office in Calcutta in which a Muslim can hope for any post above the rank of a porter, messenger, filler of inkpots or mender of posts." Thus the Muslims suffered due to the British rule and unjustly deprived of their rights. This way they not only separated the Muslim community from the Hindus they also helped in dividing these communities and causing social dislike among eachothet.
