A Little More InformationUntil the Battle of Britain, Germany had enjoyed an unbroken string of military successes. Czechoslovakia, the Rhineland, Austria, Poland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, on and on. At the end of 1940, Hitler controlled all of Western Europe, excepting neutral states like Spain, Portugal and Switzerland.

But Hitler knew that the British were still a threat. He wanted to neutralize England as a combatant before he set out on his ultimate quest -- land in the east, meaning the Soviet Union. He believed -- correctly -- that Germany could not successfully wage full-scale war on two fronts. What became known as the Battle of Britain was his opening gambit in an attempt to neutralize England as a threat, and thereby secure his western flank. Once the RAF was eliminated in the opening Luftwaffe assault, Operation Sea Lion was Hitler's design for the cross-channel invasion of the British Isles.

The Battle of Britain was a failure for Germany -- the first -- because the Luftwaffe was unable to gain control of the skies over England and thereby enable the cross-channel invasion. This short-term failure led inevitably to long-term disaster when the British Isles became the staging ground, first for the aerial bombardment of Germany, and then for the invasion of western Europe at Normandy in June, 1944.
