King James I of England was a monarch who kept England out of war for twenty years up until 1618 with the outbreak of the Thirty Years War into which England was eventually forced to join, but still played only a small part. On the whole, James entitled himself Rex Pacificus because he saw himself as the keeper of the peace, as shown by his personal motto 'Beati Pacificus' which translates as 'Blessed are the peacemakers' he wanted to be a mediator in Europe, overseeing problems other nations had and helping solve them in any way other than conflict. In England he succeeded in starting the unification of religion and Scotland to England and despite the attempt on his life via the Gunpowder Plot he remained openminded and tolerant of Catholocism despite being a Protestant all his life. He lived for peace and in peace and presented himself a title to suit that life goal.
