Martin Luther King Jr. wanted everyone to be equal. He gave the speech there because Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. And the speech is "I Have a Dream."
Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech was given on the last day of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The March was coordinated by King, A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, to show the American government that demands needed to be met so that African-Americans can be treated as equals.
Demands such as the ending of segregation, ending racial discrimination and ending police brutality towards civil rights workers were made. John F. Kennedy was President of the time.
The Lincoln Memorial was chosen because Abraham Lincoln emancipated the slaves. In other words, he passed legislation that made slavery illegal. No other American president, despite their feelings about slavery, had the courage to do such a thing. Lincoln strove for peace within the American Union. Likewise, King strove for peace among all races.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." - Martin Luther King Jr.
Lincoln fought for the rights of black slaves at that time that's why he abolish slavery not to mention that Lincoln is considered to many people around the world as our first black president. So, King's speech was appropriate in Lincoln's memorial meaning his approval and admiration for Lincoln's love for all people despite color and King was to continue to fight for the Black's right to total freedom, freedom that Lincoln had given them as an equal in part.
Because he felt that someday it would come true and it did
For a rhetorical reason, at least. Presenting the speech at the Memorial links Dr. King to Lincoln, increasing his speaker credability.
