She changed the religion of England because she did not like what her half-brother Edward had done. Mary was very Catholic and her brother was Protestant. When he became King he changed some of the ways of the Church of England of their father which had remained virtually the same as the Roman Catholic Church. After Edward died Mary undid what her brother did to make the country Catholic again.

Mary I was brought up a Catholic and after her father Henry VIII and her half-brother Edward died tried to restore in England the faith which she held dear. Also, her insistence, against all advice, on marrying the King of Spain (a Catholic country), meant that restoring Catholicism would be beneficial to her position politically, as well as financially.

However, she betrayed the faith that she held, and was an absolute fanatic, as, rather than being Christian, she had a blinkered view of Catholicism and, because of this fanaticism, attempted to restore Catholicism to England at all costs.

This included murder, massacre and torture. She ordered the executiion of over 280 prominent churchmen, including many bishops and even the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer. Most were executed by being burned alive at the stake. In addition to these, many thousands more were tortured and imprisoned. Even her husband, Philip of Spain, condemned her actions, but under a pre-marriage agreement, was powerless to act.

Mary I went on to become known as 'bloody Mary' because of her fanatical, callous and evil genocide of her religious advisors, and church leaders across the country. On her death, the whole country breathed a sigh of relief, and her sister Elizabeth I was proclaimed queen, and the country returned to Protestantism.

A:

When Queen Mary (1553-58) attempted to restore the papacy, two hundred bishops and scholars were burnt at the stake. English Protestantism was reduced to a persecuted remnant, with many of its most able figures taking refuge abroad to avoid the martyrdom which was the fate of those who remained behind.

.

AnswerMary ascended to the throne under the conditions of Henry VIII's Will which left the throne to his son, Edward, then his daughters Mary and Elizabeth. Mary had parliament announce that Henry's marriage to his first wife (Mary's mother) legal and valid; and then she had parliament repeal all of the laws that the protestants had forced through under the reign of Mary's brother, Edward, while he was still a minor, thus re-established the Catholic faith which had been constant in England since the sixth century. Mary was actually quite lenient, eventually even invited her sister, Elizabeth, who was considered illegitimate under Catholic marriage law, back to court, and attempting to reconcile with the protestant nobles. Those who proved recalcitrant and would not acknowledge the authority of their Queen eventually paid for it with their lives as traitors to the state. Despite her inheriting the title of "Bloody Mary" her reign was remarkable for its attempt to work together with all parties and the body count and torture were significantly less than either her father or her sister who later inherited the throne and again separated England from historic Christianity.
