At the beginning of the McCarthy era, there was much fear mongering. The inflated statements made by McCarthy were believed by the American public. However, after some time, the public realized that what he was saying could not be true.
Long story short, his witch hunt went too far, accusing even members of the US Army of being Communists. This caused him to lose support in his home state (Wisconsin) and among his fellow Republican Senators. Eventually the Senate voted to punish him for overstepping his duties, and he lost all power. He died shortly thereafter, likely due to complications from heavy drinking/Alcoholism.

The investigation conducted by Senator Joseph McCarthy on alleged communist infiltration of the armed forces eventually lost support and credibility. McCarthy's tactics and reckless accusations led to public backlash, and he was censured by the Senate in 1954. This event marked the decline of McCarthy's influence and marked the beginning of his downfall.
