Quran, Musdlims holy book revealed by God to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the angel Gabriel (Jibril), names Jews and Christians as the people of holy book because they are holders of the holy books Torah and The Bible that are God revelations to respectively Moses and Jesus (Peace be upon them).
Accordingly, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Muslims call Jews and Christians as the people of the book because they believe that the Torah (as the holy book of Jews) and the Bible (as the holy book of Christians) are revelations from God.
There are three ways to approach why Muhammad preached tolerance for the People of the Book (Jews, Christians, and Sabians) :
Pro-Muhammad Perspectives
1) God, Not Muhammad: If you take the Islamic Theological View that God is the author of the Qur'an and was merely using Muhammad as an instrument of his revelation, then it was God's view that the People of the Book should be tolerated and Muhammad was simply following God's word.
2) Muhammad Genuinely Cared: This is the view that Muhammad tolerated the People of the Book because they had previously received revelation and, therefore, Muhammad considered them to be holy and worth saving. In this view Muhammad was more receptive to religious minorities because of genuine respect for them and their traditions.
Anti-Muhammad Perspective
3) Muhammad's Consolidation of Power: This is the view that Muhammad tolerated the People of the Book to prevent the Jews and Christians from allying with the Henotheist and Polytheist Arabs he was actively fighting against. If Muhammad persecuted all Non-Muslims at the same time, he would not have enough people defending him to emerge victorious. By allowing the People of the Book to be tolerated and part of his society, it allowed Muhammad to consolidate power against the Henotheist and Polytheist Arabs while going after the People of the Book with repressive policies when he was victorious.
Their Bible is the Tanakh [Tanach], which is the same as the Christian Old Testament. So basically, we read from the same Book. THE Book.
Mohammed called Jews and Christians "People of the Book" since they had previous Divine Religious Testaments.
In fact, Islam is the continuation of Judaism and Christianity. Islam preaches tolerance of all human beings provided they don't raise arms against Islam.
Muhammad preached tolerance for Christians and Jews as People of the Book because they recognize the God of Abraham as the one and only god. Another reason is that Christians and Jews practice faiths that have been revealed through divine ordinances.
They are the Jews & the Christians, they are called so because they had received holy scriptures from Allah (God) before the message of Muhammad PBUH.

Islam says that Jews and Christians must be respected as People of the Book.
If you are speaking of Muslims the tern to describe Jews and Christians is Infidel or people of the book.
Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians
Since the Muslims believe that Jews and Christians were "People of the book", they received special treatment.
people of the book أهل الكتاب
Muslims do not encourage their children not to like Christians. Christians and Jews are people of the book as mentioned in the Quran and the people closer to Muslims are Christians as mentioned in the Quran. Muslims are allowed to marry Christians and Jews as they are people of the book. It is therefore a misconception on your part to think that Muslims are encouraged not to like Christians!
Jews and Christians were considered the People of the Book because they had received prior revelations from God.
The People of the Book are the Christians and the Jews, the book being The Bible, which Muslims revere. The People of the Book are the Christians and the Jews, the book being the Bible, which Muslims revere.the people of the book are the christians and jews....which means they are the people who belives the books that god send for us like :Quran,Bible and Old TestmentAnswer:The People of the Book are the people who read the Bible, basically. However, the term "The Book" is used, in the Qur'an, to mean several things. Primarily, it means the source, the essence, the original 'book' from which God caused to descend the Scrolls of Abraham, the Torah of Moses, the Psalms of David, the Gospel of Jesus (not the same as Mathiew, Mark Luke and John which are partly corrupted) and the Qur'an to Muhammad (which is the only revelation that has remained fully intact - as the Prophet recited it and in it's original form and language).
They call them people of the book as Christians are holders of the God Bible holy book and Jews are holders of the God Torah holy book. Muslims call Christians and Jews to worship God as the one and only one with no partner, no associate, no companion, and no equivalence. God sent books (revelations) to the people pf those two religions as He revealed the Torah (old testament) to the Jews through prophet Musa (Moses) and He revealed the bible (new testament) to the Christians through prophet ESa (Jesus) - peace be upon them all - and that's something they have in common with Muslims who received the last and final revelation from God to mankind - the Quran that was revealed by God to prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Muslims call Christians and Jews to worship God as the one and only one with no partner, no associate, no companion, and no equivalence. They call them people of the book as Christians are holders of the God Bible holy book and Jews are holders of the God Torah holy book.
