The tribe of Quraish, which ruled Mecca at the time Muhammad was called to his mission, made their income through pilgrims who would come to Mecca to worship their own tribal gods. Though they knew of their ancestor Abraham - and the Oneness of God - they fell into idol worship and, therefore, became wealthy catering to all the idol worshippers from the Middle East and Africa.

When Muhammad came, he was calling them to the belief that "There is no true god except the One God" and that "Muhammad is His Messenger".

That meant that the very livelihood of Quraish was threatened. No longer could they worship three hundred plus gods - they had to worship and obey the One God alone. Also, no longer could they gamble and drink and commit adultery. And no longer could they make up their own rules - they had to obey the Messenger of God.

That is why they persecuted Muhammad and his followers for ten years in Mecca; then they waged war on them for another thirteen years after Muhammad and his followers moved to Medinah.

First it was because he insulted their gods, even in the Kaaba Temple itself, and threatened the pagans with hellfire, which was disrespectful to their religion, customs and ancestors.

Second it was because Mecca was a tourist centre that made a lot of money out of the Kaaba Temple. The Meccans were afraid that if people converted to Islam, they would lose interest in visiting the Kaaba, and then Mecca would lose tourism revenue.

Third it was because the Muslims became violent. A pagan started a verbal argument, and a Muslim hit him with a camel's jawbone. After that, fights and counter-fights broke out in the streets, and it wasn't always the Muslims who started it.

There may have been other reasons, but these are the main ones mentioned in the Muslim sources. There are no non-Muslim sources.

For being afraid to lose their power on people and slaves and for feeling pride of themselves and grand families to the extent of not accepting to follow others.

What did Gene Pitney mean by mecca in his song?

"Mecca" is a city in Saudi Arabia where those who follow the teachings of the prophet Muhammad try to travel to, or make a pilgrimage, or "Hajj" to, at least once in their lifetime. They enter in to the "Ka'ba" for this worship. Only those who are Muslims may enter into the Ka'ba. An infidel, or unbeliever, would take their life in their hands to try to do so. Hence I am persuaded the "brownstone house" is just as hard to attain for Gene as Mecca is in the middle east. Also it can be just as far away as Mecca is, the other side of the world.

How did Muhammad's teachings affect early Arabian society?

It's hard to say, for these two reasons. (1) We don't know much about pre-Islamic society. Most of the surviving records are by Muslims. (2) It is difficult to distinguish Muhammad's teachings from the fact that Muhammad conquered Arabia and ruled the society by force. The reality of military rule, rather than any teachings about theology or morality, was probably the biggest change to Arabian society.

In the year 620 AD why did the Meccans want to kill Prophet Muhammad?

Muhammad's influence was beginning to grow at a very fast rate, one which would be hard to control if it kept on going. The Makkans had already seen the defense the Abyssinian king had offered and any more exposure would be critical in their mission to break Islam. They also planned to save their monopoly over the Ka'abah, by killing Muhammad, which would be overthrown if Muhammad proved successful.

Which part of the particle model seem reasonable to you which part do you find hard to accept for grade 7 science focus?

I don't think the particle model is hard to accept for grade 7 students because I was one last year. I'm not sure if you mean it's hard to accept because of religion or hard to accept because it is so counter intuitive?

What happended upon Muhammad's return to Mecca?

Muhammad returned with his Muslim companions to his homeland Mecca after a long journey of torment & suffering for all of them, this was after 8 years from his migration from Mecca to Al- Madina ( about 630 AD ) , the disbelievers of Mecca were asked by Muhammad PBUH about what they thought he would do to them , they told him "اخ كريم و ابن اخ كريم "i.e that he is the generous....& it wasn't a surprise when Muhammad had announced ( by saying :اذهبوا فانتم الطلقاء ) that he forgave them & gave them the peace & nothing but the peace. In that great day all the idols around Al-Kaaba were crushed ,they were 360 ! Hadrat Belal ibn Rabah, may Allah be pleased with him , was asked by the prophet Muhammad BPUH to stand up on the Kaaba & to call for the prayer (Al athan : Allah is the greatest , I believe that there is no God but Allah ,I believe that Muhammad is the massenger of Allah , come to the prayer., come to the good deed , Allah is the greatest , Allah is the greatest , there is no God but Allah ). Many great things happened in that fantastic & glorious day & it's really very hard to mention all of them , but as a result of the tolerancy & wounderful morals of Islam represented by the prophet Muhammad PBUH & his companions people of Mecca all converted to Islam ,men, women ,young & old......Mecca becomes an Islamic city with all of what the word means.
