The speech was given March 23, 1775, at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia, at a meeting of the Virginia Convention (the House of Burgesses had been officially closed down by the British governor).

With this speech and the support of fellow Virginians, Henry convinced the colonial government to arm the militia for use against the British. Less than a month later, the first battles of the Revolutionary war were fought in Boston.

Patrick Henry said this in 1775, at a time when the American colonists were deciding that they had endured too much unjust treatment from England, and it might be time to actively protest what seemed to the colonists like tyranny. (This would ultimately lead to the Revolutionary War.) Henry was speaking to the Virginia Convention, and his speech was intended to motivate those who were not sure whether to stand up to the British or not: he said that if he could not have liberty, he would rather die.

He said it because He no longer wanted to be ruled by The British. He believed that if He was not going to be free, He would rather be dead.

He said that answer because if he didnt have freedom he wanted death instead of having to live without freedom to do the things he wanted to do

He said it because he wanted America to be free of English rule. Along with many of the other colonists, he believed in independence.
