He wanted to get to neighboring farms etc. and a good efficient way was to travel was by river. New Zealand rivers are commonly fast flowing and shallow. Prop boats cannot travel up these rivers because their propellers would hit the bottom of the river bed. Therefore he created a jet unit that nothing sticks out from underneath the boat. Completely flat. You can get up rivers in only inches of water.
