Compared to so many Wars before and after, WW2 was not particularly long. Morevoer, as it pertains to the war in Europe, perhaps because of all the movies and stories glorifying it, many modern Americans don't appreciate how short much of the actual conflict really was. D Day on Normandy beach in France really was when the allied forces started an active ground combat in Europe. Certianly, there were air and naval battles for years before, but the point of the invasion force was that is what got the allies their military foothold. The campaign through Europe was certainly fierce but Germany fell only about 9 months after D - Day. The Pacific theatre was vicious a vicious combat for longer, really starting with or shortly after Pearl Harbor and ending with VJ day which was after V day in Europe...albeit again compared to many conflicts, not a super long time.

For the most part, the American public had no desire to enter World War 2. Though they empathized and even provided material support to Britain and Canada, the people wished to remain neutral. However, US leadership was anxious to go to war with Germany, and were able to do so upon Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Hitler actually made this easier on Roosevelt by declaring war on the US, as Roosevelt was going to have to convince the American public that they needed to go to war with Germany as well as Japan.

During World War I, the Allies were unable to defeat Germany and its allies until over four years had passed due to their own weaknesses and mistakes as well as to the strengths of their opponent. Especially influential on the length of the conflict was the collapse of Russia in 1917, which allowed Germany to reinforce its western front and even initiate a large offensive in 1918.

The United states did not get involved in the war until 1941 after the bombing of pearl harbor. The reason we did not enter sooner was because although we were allies with Briten and France, the American people did not want to get involved with what they saw as another European conflict (Remembering what happened in ww1). So for a wile the U.S. decalired they were Neurural delaying what they knew would eventualy happen. When Japan bombed us and and Germany also declaired war on the United States, although Japan were the ones to drag us into it, we were egar to fight Hitler who had more industural power then Japan did. This is probably not the whole story, but I heard it was partly because President Franklin Roosevelt did not want another Great War (World War 1) and because of the budget deficits of that time were exponential.
