One item was that there was no more land in Europe. What there was had already been claimed. The property was being passed down to the oldest sons, leaving any other sons with no real source of income, other than to work for their brothers or other farmers. Coming to the new world allowed them to own their own property and be their own bosses.

Very few. The only civilian free settlers on the First Fleet were the wives and children of some of the marines. No other settlers sought passage on the convict-dominated Fleet. There are no records listing the wives and children, but it is estimated that there were not more than a couple of dozen.
