In the Time of Jesus, ALL Jews did not work on the Sabbath because it was (and still is) the Jewish day of rest. Today ALL Orthodox and many non-Orthodox Jews will not work on the Sabbath. The Fourth Commandment is to keep the Sabbath Holy by not performing labors.

Exodus 20:8-11New International Version (NIV)

8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Above is the Fourth Commandment of the Jewish Bible. Keeping Sabbath is important (and was important) to Jews because of how it is represented there.

What did Jesus say when the disciples were picking grain on the sabbath day?

When the Pharisee reacted that Jesus violated the rules of the Sabbath, Jesus then told them about the time of King David. David and his men ate the food of the temple even it was only required for a priest.Abiathar the priest at that time allowed them because Yahweh allowed it. Jesus then told the Pharisee that the Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath.

What prohibitions existed during the Sabbath at the time of Jesus?

There were many things that were not allowed during the Sabbath in His time. The Sabbath worship started Friday evening at sundown and ended Saturday morning as sunrise. The Sabbath continues through Saturday. During the Sabbath, you may only walk a certain amount of steps that day. And even less steps before stopping and praying and then walking again. You may not exceed the amount of steps that day. You were not allowed to heal, help, or work that day. Any violation with that law would lead to death. This is a reason that the Jews wanted to kill Jesus. (Let it be noted that the Jews never actually killed Him, it was the Romans.) He went against the Sabbath rules. He helped, He healed, and He worked nonstop. That includes the Sabbath. It really angered everyone that He did that on the Sabbath, and it angered them more that at the same time, He was saying that He was the Son of God. In the Jews minds and point-of-view, Jesus was this random man that broke the sacred rules of the Sabbath and claimed to be God's Son. In their eyes, Jesus was mocking God, when in fact He was just preaching. And He was the Son of God. Of course, few believed this until after Hid death. Once He died, they all realized that He was the Son of God.

What was the religion like in the time of Jesus?

Jesus was born and raised a Jew. At the time the Jews were being oppressed by their Roman conquerors and people were hoping for a Messiah who would overthrow their enemies.

How were Jews treated in biblical times?

Jews were treated as slaves to Ramses, the pharoah of Egypt at the time. They prayed in tents before they built the first temple (which was destroyed, the remains being the Western Wall). They were lead out of Egypt by Moses where the Red Sea parted to let the Israelites (Jews) across, and it flowed on top of the Egyptions so they couldn't reach the Jews.

How did the Romans treat Jesus?

The Romans treated Jesus very cruely and unfairly. They crucified him. They were told (by the Jews) that he was a leader of an anti-Roman rebellion. He was called "The King of Jews" - and in the Roman empire, kings were not allowed.

What did fishermen do on Sundays in the time of Jesus?

It depends. If they were Jewish, they were probably fishing. The Sabbath actually starts Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset. In the time of Jesus they would have observed the true Sabbath.

If Jesus was the King of the Jews why does Judaism therefore not accept Jesus today?

Because at the time of Jesus not all the Jews believed he was the King foretold. This was because Jesus did things that the Jewish religious system called "blasphemous", such as daring to heal people or help in urgent situations on the SABBATH day etc. The Jews were "by-the-book" people and couldn't accept that Jesus did these things against Jewish-sabbath tradition. The Jews didn't understand scripture as well as they would have liked because all of these things were prophesised well before this time, in the books of Daniel, isaiah, eziekial etc. It was very clear that Jesus was indeed the promised Messiah, but the Jewish leaders could not accept this, because it didn't fit in with their pre-concieved ideas. Jesus said He had come not to "do away" with scripture, but to FULFILL it! He also said that he was bringing a NEW covanent ot his people. Messianic Jews are Jews who do accept that Jesus was and is the promised Messiah. There are plenty of messianic Jews today who follow Jesus.

What are you not allowed to do on the Sabbath in Jesus time?

Well, that is a very simple question :). Look at the Bible, don't ask other people about what the Bible means when it says rest on the Seventh day, ask the Bible itself. Go to biblegateway.com and tipe in the word Sabbath, it will show you all the verses concerning the Sabbath and that way you can know how to keep the Sabbath, what you can do and what you can't do.

Why did Jesus abolish the sabbath?

As it was Jesus who under the direction of His Father (God) created this world and populated it. He completed his task on the 6th day, (This time is only figurative) and on the 7th He rested, and the Lord hallowed it and sanctified it He becoming Lord of the sabbath.

Do jews celebrate the sabbath?

The Torah contains 613 commandments which Jews are meant to follow. Some of these only apply to specific people and some no longer apply, but the rest are still observed today by Orthodox Jews. The Sabbath is just one of these commandments. It does have a central place in Jewish community life.
