Also, Lee was dedicated to the defence of Virginia, as his home-state, and some say he didn't really care about the Western theatre.

Because in the first half of the war, everyone thought it was just a case of "Forward to Richmond!" or "Forward to Washington!"

Then for a time, it was stalemate in the East, while attention switched to the West.

Then Grant was appointed General-in-Chief and forced Lee on to the defensive with his Overland Campaign, aimed at Richmond.
