Why did people sell slaves?

Slave owners sold their slaves to earn extra money. They often bred their slaves so that they did not need to waste money on buying more slaves. When the baby slave was born, they were sometimes sold or kept on the plantation/where they worked.

Rich farm owners who wanted a slave would attend a gathering when the slaves were released from the ships. The rich men chose a slave they wanted on depending on how fit the slave looked, or how well they could work on their farms (plantations).

Some slaves were sold outright and others were auctioned to the highest bidder. Sometimes families would be sold together and sometimes they were split up among different buyers.

often because the slaves were not bringing in enough money or because there wives would get up set because a slave child looked like her husband/master knowing that he must have did it with the slave.So they would usually try and sell the slave or persuade the master to sell her/him....I know it was very cruel but it is the truth after all have u ever wondered why people from Africa are so dark and if African American here came from there why aren't they the same color...and the sadest part was watching on roots that he made his on child work for him,if u don't believe me go to the public library and get roots the series...halle berry and raven symone are in Alex Haley's Queen

They were sold because they were thought to be property and tools. As with all tools people bought and sold them as to make money.
