Because he knew 'A house divided cannot stand." If the south had split away from the North, everything our forefathers achieved in the Revolutionary War would have been for nothing. We wouldn't be the UNITED states anymore, and we could possibly even be invaded by other countries. Even if we weren't, there were no natural boundaries to separate the North from the South (Like a mountain Range or long river) so we would constantly be fighting one another and having boundary disputes. Also, he was against slavery, and the South would have kept it as its own country. Mostly, he knew we needed each other.

Did President Lincoln advocate using force to end state secession from the Union?

When President Lincoln took office as president in March of 1861, he did not advocate using armed force to unify the US by ending the secession of the seven Southern states that had seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. He made it clear, however, that he would use force against such states if they used violence against the Union. That is why from March 1861 to April 13, 1861, Lincoln did not seek to raise troops to end the "rebellion". When the Confederacy sought and succeeded in taking over the Federal Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina by force, is when Lincoln decide to raise US troops to end the rebellion.

Why was Lincoln against secession?

Lincoln was worried about Maryland seceding due to the close proximity to Washington, DC. To prevent Maryland from seceding he suspended Habeas Corpus in Maryland. This allowed him to arrest Maryland residents without giving any reason or explanation. If they dared talk of seceding they could be imprisoned.
