Because Chevrolet was afraid that their manual transmissions would not be able to handle the power of the Corvette.
1953. It came out with a six cylinder and a powerglide (2 speed auto trans); no other powertrain options. In fact, if the 265 v-8 handn't been introduced in 1955, the vette would have died. I think that in '54 only about 600-800 vettes were even built due to the sucky six-banger.
white The first model, a convertible, was designed by Harley Earl and introduced at the GM Motorama in 1953 as a concept show car. 300 hand-built polo white Corvette convertibles were produced for the 1953 model year.
Manual only
Chevrolet & Pontiac were the only brands to use to Powerglide. The rear engine Corvair used a modified Powerglide. Pontiac used a similar transmission in the Tempest although it was called a TempesTorque'. Some sources claim Pontiac and Oldsmobile used the older, cast-iron case Powerglide when the Hydromatic transmission plant burned in '53. Most if not all Pontiacs of the '60's and '70's that have a two-speed automatic transmission do NOT have a Powerglide; they have a Turbo-Hydramatic model 300 transmission; also used by Oldsmobile.
1953, there were only 300 hand-build Corvettes made that year, making them the rarest & most value ones.
The 2 speed Powerglide was the only automatic trans available for the Chevelle in 1965.

The only nickel I can think of in a Corvette, would be in the engine bearing inserts.
General Motors, they have been the only one to produce the Corvette.
The first generation Corvette was a convertible. It was released by Chevrolet and made it's first public appearance at a car show in 1953. The car was intended only as a concept car, however it created so much interest that GM decided to put it into production in June of '53.
